Insomnia should not be ignored
Even though sleep is often thought of as "natural" or something we should be able to do on our own, sometimes something (internal or external) disrupts our sleep and we need help to get our sleep back on track
It's not a good idea to brush aside your sleep problem and write it off as a "fact of life." Because it's not! Insomnia is a real medical condition. And when confronted, it can be managed.
Insomnia has health consequences
Insomnia can have a tremendous impact on your quality of life. Consequences of not getting enough good sleep can include:
- Daytime fatigue and irritability
- Decreased feelings of well-being
- Decreased ability to concentrate, problem-solve and make decisions
Sleep helps the body conserve energy and recharge. Therefore, it is not surprising that insomnia takes its toll on physical health.
Talk with your doctor
Unfortunately, many people who experience insomnia never bother to tell their doctor. They think it's just a phase that will pass. If your sleepless nights are impacting your days, talk to your doctor soon because short-term, or transient, insomnia may turn into chronic insomnia if ignored. Tell your doctor about your sleeplessness, specific symptoms and how long you've been experiencing them. Together you can determine if you have insomnia and find a sleep plan that works for you.
